We can all agree that every child deserves an equal opportunity to succeed in school. Systemic racism and bias have created an uneven playing field for Black students. Empowered Parents in Community (EPiC) intends to change that. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Black parents within education.
Although we started in one school in Durham, North Carolina in 2016, the need is great in many schools across our State. We are currently in 16 schools and 2 counties. Discipline disparities and access to advanced academics are just a couple of areas in which inequities have continued to negatively impact Black students.
The collectives of Black parents and allies who support the work of disrupting inequities and bias learn about the opportunity gap and what contributes to inequities. EPiC’s work includes the following:
- Facilitating listening sessions to hear from those who are closest impacted by disparities to offer solutions for change.
- Organizing parent-led initiatives to introduce programs that affirmed children's cultural backgrounds as a means to bridge home and school.
- Empower parents to organize resources for their children and partner with school administrators and educators to find solutions.
- Invest in academic excellence for all children.
Your investment will make a lasting impact in the following ways:
- Remove barriers for Black parents to engage with EPiC and their communities through stipends, transportation access, food, and childcare).
- Trainings that support having race-based conversation that is productive and allows for authentic engagement and change.
- Greater student support in the school with increased Black parent leadership.
